St John History

This page is dedicated to the history of Saint John. Admittedly, being a newly appointed pastor to Saint John, I am still learning myself — so, this page will be a work in progress. In the meantime – here are some historical facts about Saint John UMC:

1846-Sanctuary was built
1849-Land deeded to Methodist Episcopal Church South where sanctuary and parsonage are located.
1925-Exterior entrance to balcony on north side of building was closed and stairs built inside.
1927- Education Building was completed.
1949- Parsonage was dedicated.
1967- Scout building was built.
1979- St. John UMC was placed on the National Register of Historical Places.
1986- The Bessie Pearl Williams building was consecrated.
1993- The Darby building was dedicated. This replaced the Scout building, which had burned sometime earlier.
1995- Picnic Shelter was built.
1996-Playground was dedicated.
St.John has been attached to, or been a part of,a charge or sponsored seven churches:
1847-Langley, 1859 St. John’s Aiken; 1878 Vaucluse ; 1897 Pentecost; 1904-1918 Quinby Chapel;1957-Charles Wesley; 1995 until the present Warrenville UMC.
1999-Clearwater UMC was closed and members and property were transferred to St. John UMC.
