A Day of Worship or a Life of Worship?

I think it’s safe to say that for most people, when they hear the word “worship,” they think of Sunday worship service. This makes sense because Sunday “worship” has been embedded into the Christian culture ever since the early church was formed, and yes—there is evidence in the New Testament that the Christians gathered for worship on Sunday, which they considered the Lord’s Day (1 Cor. 16:1-2; Rev. 1:10). The worship service that the early Christians engaged in was very similar to how we worship today— it contained Scripture, prayer, hymns, and a sermon. So, this is what comes to mind when most hear the word “worship.” But what does it mean beyond Sunday morning? To ask this differently, what does worship look like in every-day-life.

In his letter to the Romans, Paul encourages Christians to “present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship” (Romans 12:1). Did you catch that last phrase “Spiritual worship?” Doubtful that Paul is referring to the Sunday worship service that we engage in only once a week. When the Bible talks about worship, it is referring to a life of worship. A life of worship is rooted in the love that God has shown us in Jesus Christ. A life of worship is one full of grace, compassion, patience, forgiveness, humility, self-discipline—and these are just a few things. Granted, sometimes these things are difficult to do, but they are the very things that God has called us to do, and most importantly—they bring us closer to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and each other. So, as you go about your daily living — practice these things and you will be living a life of worship beyond worship on Sunday morning. God bless all of you.
