Reflecting on Holy Week
By the time you read this newsletter, we will be preparing for Holy week, which begins on Palm Sunday when Jesus made his triumphant entry into Jerusalem. From that point forward, the mood turns somber as Jesus prepares for his final moments on the cross of Good Friday, which is the most difficult day of Passion week. Can you imagine the intense thoughts and emotions that Jesus must have experienced throughout his final week? The truth is, none of us can, but that does not mean we shouldn’t take time to reflect on these things throughout Holy Week. I want to challenge all of you to take some time during the upcoming Holy Week to reflect on the life of Jesus and His self-giving love for all of us. Also, take the time to attend the Maundy Thursday service in the Saint John Sanctuary at 7pm. On Good Friday, the sanctuary will be open for those who would like to come and pray in silence, and on Saturday the Sanctuary doors will be shut as a symbol of Jesus lying in the tomb. Then, on Easter Day, I hope that you will join us for a worship service filled with Song & Praise, Prayer and Reflection — and an Easter message that simply proclaims — He is Risen!
Then Jesus withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done.” [Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.] (Luke 22:41-44)
